Firstly does this still occur with snapshot main 4695? 4693 had a bug which was introduced by the fix for the Windows explorer address bar. Though its all now fixed in 4695.
I can certainly reproduce the error sound. This is due to NVDA not being able to create a virtualBuffer, as it had not successfully injected in-process and therefore our virtualBuffer RPC interface was not available.
As for the crash though... I don't really see a crash. After the error sound I'm able to press nvda+numpad5 and it reports the document node. I can do other non-gui NVDA commands. I can not seem to tab around the app though. But as long as I don't bring up the NVDA menu or NVDA dialog (see #1800) I can alt+tab out of the app and use the rest of the system.
However, I think I do notice some slow down and eventually I do need to restart NVDA.
Is this what you see?
Or do you actually see a hard crash i.e. NVDA dies straight away and it restarts itself.

yes, this still occurs in snapshot main 4695. Great that you're able to reproduce the error sound, it's known, and all the technical details are known. This is very important since it occurs in most Metro apps: Stocks, Store, Tweet@rama, News, etc.
After error sound is made, NVAD+TAB will provide feedback, but successive presses will result in silence, and at which point, NVDA crashes/freezes, not allowing anything to be done. This includes any query, review, or navigation. Re-launching NVDA, it's not possible to like you said TAB around in the UI. It's interesting as it's possible to TAB around in Stocks and Tweet@rama, which are both Metro apps on the Start Screen.
Yes, #1800 is a nasty one with the inability to bring up any NVDA GUI within Metro apps. Hope NVAccess will be able to work out the technical details with Microsoft and allow for it to all work.
Once NVDA crashes/freezes, I'm unable to ALT+TAB, go to desktop, etc. I have to eihter restart Win8 or NVDA.
Yes, quite often, especially when using any/all Metro app for a short-period and it gets worst with longer periods of time; NVDA will either freeze/crash/slow-down, requiring a restart of NVDA. I've also seen where NVDA will crash and restart, but also where it will crash/freeze and never return.

narrator has the same issue within Weather, where TAB will not provide any feedback. However, after launching Weather Metro Style app, pressing TAB to get into content area, then using the various text review to read by paragraph, line, word, and characters will work to review the info. However, this level of text review is not possible with NVDA, which it should be able to provide at least the same level, if not greater than what Narrator is able to provide, considering UI automation is how Narrator and third-party screen readers obtain the info.

Hi,
The latest update to Bing Weather (2014) does allow NVDA to give feedback when pressing TAB and Shift+TAB. Also, I can navigate content areas using arrow keys (this is with Windows 8.1, not 8.0).
Thanks.

This ticket was filed before NVDA's support for Windows Store apps (a.k.a. Metro apps). Therefore, the severe issues reported here should now be fixed.
