In windows live messenger, when we use the arrow keys to read the instant message before sending it, in english it is ok to use the right
and the left arrow to read characters and the ctrl plus the left and the right arrow to read words and correct the misspellt words, but in arabic
when we use the left and right arrow keys to read characters, NVDA keeps silent. Also silence occurs when using back space; when pressing back space to
delete a character, the letter is expected to be spoken; however, it is still silent.

I don't think there is any simple way to fix this right now, certainly not in 2010.2.
No doubt the problem is with the display model not yet properly handling RTL text.
Work does need to be made on display model to support this, but at the moment, I suggest using the Windows Live beta or waiting until the next Windows Live Version. The New Windows Live applications now implement a much better way for screen readers to gain access to the Windows Live edit fields, including the message input field.

Leaving this ticket open as the problem should still eventually be fixed for older Windows Live versions as its a good example of RTL with the display model.
Changes:
Milestone changed from 2010.2 to None

IN using RTL versions of Windows Live Messenger, NVDA doesn't report the incoming messages at all and it keeps silent. even if we moved and tried to read using the arrow keys. It doesn't report anything at all. Hope this problem is to be solved soon.

dear developers,
we observed the following during our usage to arabic and english windows live messenger 2011 :
what i'm going to mention is applicable to both Arabic and English msn
1 we can use the left and the right arrows to move between the characters before sending our message.
2 we also can use ctrl + left and right arrows to move between words.
3 the outgoing and the incoming messages can be read with nvda.
but the problems are:
1 during typing, nvda reads the arabic characters as english ones, but during checking it reads them well.
2 windows live messenger 2011 version is working under windows vista and windows 7 os and still most of us use windows xp.
thanks

What Fatma means here is that for vista/win7, things are mostly ok, only that the echo of typed characters are wrong.
When you switch to arabic layout, you press the key next to caps lock, and it should say sheen, but what is actually is spoken is 'a'.
When you step back and check it, you indeed see that sheen was actually inserted.

for windows xp (still very widely used throughout the middle east/north africa), nothing is spoken as initially described by this ticket.

Thanks.

I wonder if this was fixed by the solutions for either #2376 or #2411.
Please test or ask arabic users to give feedback.
Thanks.

as for this ticket, i stopped using windows live messenger and it is no longer be maintained.
but technically, are the edit fields in msn look like the edit fields in skype?
if they are similar, this ticket should be closed as fixed, as now we can use the arrow keys to move between words and chars in the chat edit field.
thanks.

Does this also apply to Windows Live Mail? If not, this ticket should be closed as wontfix, since Messenger is being discontinued.
